The Research Movement

The church has been guessing. It's time to know.

The best Adventist church growth research available today is 22 years old. AdventistPulse is building the infrastructure to change that — one church, one year, one data point at a time.

34%
of congregations are growing today
Down from 53% twenty years ago
Faith Communities Today 2020 — 15,278 congregations surveyed
40–50%
of Adventist youth leave by their mid-20s
And we still don't fully know why
Roger Dudley — 10-year study of 1,500 Adventist teenagers (2000)
22 yrs
since the last major Adventist church growth study
The church deserves better than that
Monte Sahlin, Adventist Congregations Today (2003)

The most comprehensive study of Adventist church growth ever conducted was published in 2003. It surveyed 412 churches. It took years to produce. It has never been replicated. The broader picture is equally sobering: the 2020 Faith Communities Today study found that only 34% of churches are growing — down from 53% two decades ago. The church, across almost every denomination, is shrinking. And it largely doesn't know why.

AdventistPulse is the first platform designed to generate continuous, denomination-specific intelligence about what makes Adventist churches grow, retain members, and thrive in mission. Every church that completes a Vitality Check contributes to a growing longitudinal dataset. Every year that passes, the answers get sharper.

The strength of the research depends on the breadth of participation. A dataset of 10 churches tells us very little. A dataset of 1,000 churches, tracked over five years, changes what is possible. The data belongs to the church. The findings will be published. And the mission will be better for it.

Questions we're building toward answering

Does community service investment still predict church growth — 22 years after Sahlin's landmark finding?

Which characteristics of a congregation best predict whether it will grow or decline in the next 12 months?

What is the real youth retention rate in Australian Adventism today — and what are growing churches doing differently?

Does pastoral district size affect church health? What does the data say about multi-church appointments?

Add your church's voice.

The more churches that participate, the stronger the findings — and the better equipped the whole denomination becomes to fulfil its mission.

Growing comes from knowing.

Faith is the foundation. Data is the map.
